Lake Whitney 09: We are the Champions Pt 2

Photography: John Parkinson

Thirty motos clicked off the gate on Sunday at the 2009 Thor Lake Whitney Spring Classic and we've got the scoop on everything that went down. Intead of leaving you waiting for all the classes to be updated, we've decided to clue you in on the first half of the report. Check back in later this afternoon for the third and final main event update from Whitney.

450 A/Pro Sport:

DeanWilson
The 450 A/Prosport main event turned out to be the Dean Wilson show. Starring Dean Wilson. Written and produced by Dean Wilson. Guest starring, guess who, Dean Wilson. The battle lied between Mike McDade and Kyle Regal, but all was for not. Regal carried a fourth into the moto while McDade could only muster a DNF. Hats off to Drew Yenerich in this moto. He’s still not quite there as far as consistency, but he’s proven that he can roll inside the top five. He would eventually succumb to the pressure put on by his teammate Terren Odell and eventually fall victim to Lowell Spangler, but would still put in one of his better rides of the last year. The top three on the podium would be Dean Wilson with a 1-1, Kyle Regal with a 4-2 and Terren Odell with a 3-3.

85 (9-11) Stock:

AlexanderFry
Benny Bloss
and Alexander Frye carried divisional wins into the 9-11 Stock main event, with Kade Walker and Downtown Donny Brown both carrying in seconds. Henery Miller led the first lap of the main event, but would quickly come under pressure by Blake Green, Alexander Frye, Mark Worth and Tristan Miller. Mark Worth and Alexander Frye fought tooth and nail for the number two spot (and the title) throughout the moto. Worth would have to move by Frye and have Frye lose another position in order to take the title, but would come up just shy on both accounts. Benny Bloss would enter into the fourth spot on the final lap and join the battle for the title. Bloss set the fastest lap time on the final lap, moved from fifth to first, and won the race in amazing fashion and then lost the title to Frye after passing on a yellow flag. The top three on the podium went to Alexander Frye, Benny Bloss and Rookie White, respectively.

85 (12-13):

JesseMasterpool
As the gate dropped on the 12-13 class Chris Alldredge, Adam Cicanciarulo, Cooper Webb and Matt Bisceglia blasted from the gate inside the top four and the battle for the title was on. Bisceglia made a gutsy move through the whoops on lap one to move into second and quickly began hunting down Alldredge, only to ruin his title hopes by going down in the sweeper on the next lap. With Alldredge coming in with an eighth all AC had to do was keep tabs on the number two spot in order to take home the title. But a mistake in the corner before the whoops would send the Team Green phenom to the ground and Cooper Webb into second. But as was the case with Allderege, Webb’s lackluster 10th in division one left him no chance at a title. After losing two title contenders early, it was Matt Bisceglia who would remount to take the number five spot. At this point the battle for the title was between Jesse Masterpool in fourth and Bisceglia in fifth. The two were bar to bar as the white flag waved with Masterpool leading the charge. Masterpool would edge out Bisceglia for the title in what proved to be the best championship battle of the day.

250 A/Prosport:

TylerSjoberg
Dean Wilson moves around Kyle Engle on lap one, but an amazing push by Engle over the finish line jump would allow him to recapture the lead on the outside. He would lead the majority of the second lap until going down heading into the woods section. However, after a wild turn of events, Wilson would end up pulling off the track due to mechanical issues. This left Tyler Sjoberg in the lead and the championship wide open. With a three coming out of moto one Sjoberg would take the title with a 3-1, Travis Baker would take second with a 2-3 moto score and Terren Odell would round out the podium with a 4-2.

450 C Stock:
Brad Allison
showed intermediate like speed all week in the 450 C class and he continued his streak in the 450 C Stock class on Sunday afternoon. Allison pulled through the fist corner in second but quickly moved into first. He would eventually be challenged by another C class standout, Tyler Enticknap, but Enticknap’s 21st in moto one would not be nearly enough to rob Allison of the title.

Dalton Horton moved from 10th to third by the last lap to pressure Allison for the title. With a fourth lap that was five seconds faster than that of Allison, he was able to make an inside pass on and find his way to the top of the coveted Lake Whitney Podium.

Girls (11-15):

JenniferBurton
The top three Girls 11-15 riders heading into moto two on Sunday were Jennifer Burton, Amanda Maheu and Taylor Higgins, respectively. Maheu pulled the holeshot in moto two but was followed closely by first moto winner Jennifer Burton. The pressure from Burton would prove to be too much for Maheu to handle. Burton would take the title, Maheu would fall in the whoops only feet from the finish line and would give Taylor Higgins the number two spot on the podium, thus settling for third.

Supermini (14-16):

ColeThompson
Cole Thompson
, Jeremy Martin and Zach Bell carried top three spots into the main from moto one of the 14-16 class, in that order. Bell pulled from the line with Martin hot on his heels. Bell would slowly inch away from Martin throughout the moto and would skate to his easiest moto win of the week. Thompson put in one of the best rides of the moto, however. After a poor start Thompson moved his way into the number three spot behind Martin by lap three. With Martin looking down the barrel of a 2-2 and Thompson staring a 1-3 in the face, the title was on the line for Thompson. With exceptional line choice and speed Thompson would eventually make his way past Martin on the last lap and go on to take the title. Top three went to Cole Thompson, Zach Bell and Jeremy Martin, respectively.

250 C Mod:
Dylan Bauer and Brad Allison were our first moto divisional winners in the 250 C Mod class. As fate would have it the two first moto studs would find the one and two spots on the first lap. Allison took to the lead early with one of his fastest laps of the week, but Bower was able to match and keep the party going into lap two. Bauer would stay glued to the rear fender of Allison throughout the first three laps and force him into a mistake as the race began to wind down. Allison would end up on the ground and Bauer would end up on top of the box.

65 (10-11):

BrandonGourley
Kade Walker
put in a third in moto one of the 65 (10-11) Stock class, while Brandon Gourley took the win. Walker took win in moto two, but it was Gourley who would keep composure. Knowing that he only needed to stay in second to take home the title, Gourley stayed calm and did what he had to do. The following riders would top the podium in the following order, Brandon Courley, Kade Walker and Luke Purther.

250 A:

TaylorFutrell
Taylor Futrell
's 5-1 bested Kyle Engle’s 1-5 in this knock down drag out 250 A main event. Engle got out front early, but mistakes cost him valuable spots and he was unable to keep tabs on the first place ride of Futrell. Great rides came out of a few unfamiliar faces in this moto and although they weren't able to push themselves to the top of the podium note of their accomplishments must be given. Lowell Spangler and Blake Baggett both put in their best rides of the week in this moto and while they were only able to put in a 7th and 8th in their division races, both put in solid rides in the main. The top three overall would go to Taylor Futrell, Kyle Engle and Lowell Spangler, respectively.

250 B Mod:

MaxAnstie
First moto divisional winners Max Anstie, Eli Tomac and Lance Vincent ripped from the line in the top three spots, and while Vincent was knocked out of contention after crashing on top of the hill he would have a chance to redeem himself after the race was red flagged due to a rider injury.

On the second drop is was once again the KTM motor of Max Anstie pulling a massive holeshot with Vincent in the number three spot with Nick Paluzzi filling in the middle number two spot. Paluzzi would finish the moto behind Anstie in second, but after only carrying in an eighth from moto one, would be denied a spot on the box. The final podium positions would go to Eli Tomac and Lance Vincent, respectively.

51 4-6 Stock:

StilezRobertson
Stilez Robertson
came into this moto full of confidence. After consistently setting 15-20 second faster lap times than the rest of the field yesterday, this was his race to lose. In the past few years, we’ve seen kids like Mark Worth and Blake Green dominant this class and transition very well into the 60 and 80 ranks. If Robertson stays on his current path, we’ll be seeing plenty of this kid well into the future. He’s certainly put his name on the radar. Adam Lowry finished up in 2nd about 20 seconds behind Robertson, with Ethan Mann in close tow for third.
