Well, it’s now official: JGRMX has ceased operations. In what is a devastating blow to the industry, the North Carolina-based team has announced it will close its doors.
The team, owned by NFL Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs and his son, Coy, spent 13 years in the professional ranks, operating a high-caliber team and running the factory Yamaha and Suzuki teams at different points.
Started in 2008 with Yamaha equipment, the team won its first Supercross just a year later when Josh Grant won the 2009 Anaheim 1 opener. In 2012, the team made a huge splash with the signing of James Stewart. That deal turned sour quickly though, as Stewart left after just a few months and signed with Suzuki.
The team again made a big signing in 2015, when Justin Barcia joined the squad. Barcia won races with the team but was never able to bring them a title.
The loss of AutoTrader in 2019 was a big blow to the team, as they never found a replacement as a title sponsor. Rumors around the pits are that Suzuki and the team weren’t able to come to terms and Suzuki announced on Thursday they had ended their relationship with JGR.
This sucks for the entire industry, which also lost GEICO Honda earlier this year.
