With the 2021 Motocross of Nations taking place right in the middle of the FIM Motocross World Championship season, we’ve already seen many top MXGP riders decide to opt out of the event. In addition, Ken Roczen has stated he won’t attend, and the Star Racing Yamaha team won’t be sending any riders as they will move their headquarters from California to Florida directly after the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship.
Today has brought even more bad news in regard to top riders opting out. Spain has named their team for the event and it won’t include two-time MX2 World Champion Jorge Prado or Ruben Fernandez.
The team instead will be veteran Jose Butron (MXGP), Yago Martinez (MX2) and Ander Valentin (Open).
This is a big blow for Spain as Prado is currently third in MXGP, while Fernandez is fourth in the MX2 championship.
“With the current situation of COVID and the latest movements on the calendar, it seems that this edition of MXON will be a different event in some respects compared to previous years,” said Pac Rico, national coach for Spain. “The important thing is that it seems that it will finally be possible to celebrate and the RFME with its team will be present one more year to place our flag as high as possible in the final classification. I’m sure that each of the selected riders will give their best and try to take advantage of this very special opportunity.”
Australia has yet to name their team for 2021, but it appears both Jett and Hunter Lawrence will not compete. We’ve heard rumors that the brothers are out, and MotoOnline.com’s Alex Gobert is reporting that he’s hearing the same.
Team USA is expected to be announced this weekend at Budds Creek.
