Damn it, Jeffrey!
Just when it was finally looking like Jorge Prado was stepping up and matching Jeffrey Herlings for speed and determination, the #84 has a nasty crash and suffers a neck injury. Prado ended up winning all three races over the weekend and has a comfortable gap now in the title standings, so it is definitely his to lose, but it just such a shame for Herlings to get injured once again.
Does anyone want to win the MX2 title?
Geerts has the red-plate, gets injured in France. De Wolf wins in Latvia and gets the red-plate, has a crash midweek and gets an ankle the size of a watermelon. Both riders gut out some impressive performances in Germany this weekend to keep themselves in the championship hunt (seriously, what Geerts was able to do after breaking his wrist a few weeks ago was amazing) but now it is Adamo who has the red-plate, from Benistant, both of whom are not exactly consistent. With 76 points separating the top six, it really is anyone’s guess who’s going to win it.
The numbers are there, sometimes
One of the easiest arguments to make for the GPs not being great is that there isn’t a full gate of riders. I disagree with this, as I’d prefer quality over quantity. I think everyone would love 40 guys out there, all within five seconds of the leaders lap times, but that just isn’t realistic so for me 30 is a decent amount. At Teutschenthal, all 30 riders in the MXGP class were within 10 seconds of Prado’s lap times and honestly, I think that’s about as good as it’s going to get.
Koch Fight
Tom, Tim and Nico Koch gave all the German fans some locals to cheer for in the MXGP class with Tom eventually coming out on top with a pair of top 10s. I’m not sure if there has been a race in history where three brothers (I’m going on a limb and assuming they are brothers) have each scored points in a moto before, but if there wasn’t before, there is now as they got on the board in MXGP Moto 1.
Liam makes the step
If you thought you had pressure growing up as a kid, imagine being the son of 10x World Motocross champion Stefan Everts and the grandson of multi-time World Champion Harry Everts. It’ll be pretty hard for Liam to ever be as successful as either of them, but some thought he might not even get as high as he has done before Germany. Now though, he won his first ever GP (largely thanks to another bike DNF for Coenen) and makes history for the Everts family once again. In this crazy MX2 class, it certainly isn’t beyond the realms of possibility for Everts to go on a tear and get himself involved in this championship battle.
