Welcome to a new weekly segment called “The Underrated”. Let’s face it, the Pro Motocross Championship basically has four hours worth of racing and 40 riders in each class. Riders can easily get lost in all of this. So, in this column we’re going to highlight some guys who may have been passed over on the results sheet.

Also, I’m sure I’ll miss a few riders along the way. Just know that it wasn’t on purpose. Feel free to add them in the comments below!

250MX Class

Chance Hymas: 3-4 // 4th Overall

Here at Vurb, we love to see riders come into their own, especially as these guys start to transition from rookie to sophomore year. To see Chance Hymas take that leap to podium level guy at Fox Raceway was quite impressive. This is the type of ride that we’ve been waiting to see from him since he turned pro.

Jalek Swoll: 6-5 // 5th Overall

Swoll continues to impress in Triumph’s debut year. He held third for most of the second moto. He commented on Instagram after the race that his bike setup wasn’t exactly where it needed to be, so perhaps he can finish on the podium soon.

Mark Fineis: 14-11 // 12th Overall

The Indiana Hoosier basically came out of nowhere to almost finish in the top ten! This was Fineis’ first pro race and he showed everyone that he has what it takes to succeed in a deep field on his Muc-Off/FXR/ClubMX Yamaha.

Dilan Schwartz: 12-15 // 14th Overall

Toyota of Redlands/Bar X Suzuki was definitely happy to have Schwartz back after he sat out of Monster Energy Supercross with a broken radius. This was a solid outing for his first race back. Dare we say…Summer of Schwartz?

Jett Reynolds: 16-16 // 16th Overall

He did it! Reynolds got some gate drops in and finished the day with consistency! That’s what we’re talking about. We’d love to see him do the same thing at the next 10 rounds.

450MX Class

Phil Nicoletti: 9-9 // 10th Overall

Leave it to Phil to go 9-9 for 10th overall. It looks like it may be the summer of Phil in his retirement season. He celebrated on Instagram with some amazing words for Fox Raceway. Classic Filthy.

Freddie Noren: 13-10 // 11th Overall

The man who finished 8th in points last summer had another productive start to the 2024 Pro Motocross Championship. Noren will continue to build on this.

Marshal Weltin: 16-11 // 12th Overall

Weltin is a new man this year and an absolute DOG. He finished two spots off of his 450MX career best and that 11th in the second moto ties his second best moto finish. Summer of Marsh Dog!

Cullin Park: 12-15 // 13th Overall

Park haas been out with a dislocated wrist since the 250SX East Region opener in Detroit. To return to the 450MX class with finishes like these upon his return is stellar.

Dean Wilson: 11-16 // 14th Overall

OUT OF HIS TRUCK! Hey…Dean-O…do the rest of these nationals. Thanks!

Romain Pape: 20-13 // 16th Overall

Points in both motos and 13th in moto two was strong for the Frenchman!

Derek Kelley: 14-40 // 19th Overall

DK Dog is back after sitting out the entire Monster Energy Supercross Championship with an injury. He’s actually been down and out since November and this was his first gate drop since the SMX Playoffs. Kelley moved up to the 450MX class this summer and he’s ready to mix it up with the big dogs. He ran in tenth for a bit before dropping to 14th in moto 1. Then in a freak accident broke his bars in a small crash in the first turn of moto 2. He’s okay and ready to fight at Hangtown.
