Welcome back to the Vurbmoto Amateur Roundup where each week or so I will bring you the latest in amateur motocross along with content from social media.
Not only did the World Mini Grand Prix happen last weekend, but we also had the third round of Supercross Futures in Glendale as well. I took last week off from the Amateur Roundup just to build the anticipation and I know everyone missed me. After the local Baltimore airport turned me away because the plane ticket Slaw Dog sent me was fake, I got back to my couch where Wes Williams called me to ask if I could edit social clips from World Mini all weekend. So, while Wes and the boys got to have all the fun, I got to sit behind my computer to edit. I guess that is what I get for breaking my femur, right?
Grayson Townsend
I will admit, I had not heard of Grayson Townsend until this past weekend. Being from the East Coast, this is not a name that had come across my radar before. Even though I was not at the race, I got to watch a few hours of footage and it was pretty easy to tell that Townsend was putting in work. While we can make almost anyone look good on film I could have selected any clip of Grayson at Mesquite and it would have made the social edit. I will be keeping an eye on the Team Green rider for the remainder of the year and so should you.
Jace Allred is a Certified Ripper
I’m not sure if the term “Certified Ripper” is being used by anyone else in the moto media, but I am going to claim it and Jace Allred is absolutely certified. As I said, I was not able to make it to Mesquite last weekend, but it was very easy to tell who was going fast. Jace looked to be in control of every moto he entered and did it with style. Jace makes riding a dirt bike look way too easy and there were endless shots showing it. Jace had a good run at the JS7 Freestone Spring Championship with three top 5’s and he’s won all of his Loretta’s Area Qualifiers so far. Look for Jace in the B classes and Schoolboy 2 this year.
Vurbmoto Grom Report Presented by GoPro Grom Quest
Now this is something I am pretty excited about because it directly correlates with that I am trying to do here with the Amateur Roundup. Podcasting extraordinaire and resident Canadian, Brad Gebhardt, joined forces with Wes Williams to bring you the first few episodes of Grom Report while at World Mini last weekend. Just like what I try to do with the Amateur Roundup, Grom Report is highlighting the future of motocross. Our goal is to make it so that you, and everyone else, knows who the next amateur phenom is. Head over to Vurbmoto.com or YouTube or Spotify or Apple Podcast to check out the latest episodes of Grom Quest.
Juju Gets it Done at Supercross Futures
Julien Beaumer took the win last weekend in Glendale for the third round of Supercross Futures beating the likes of Ryder DiFrancesco, Daxton Bennick, Casey Cochran, and more. The KTM Orange Brigade rider got off to a great start and never looked back Saturday night beating Ryder D by almost four seconds after 7 laps. This was an impressive win for Beaumer since Ryder D had won four prior Supercross Futures events (in 2022) and Daxton Bennick has won the first two of the year. JuJu looked comfortable all night, even through a whoop section that proved to be very difficult for the remaining two Triple Crown main events. We have two more Futures races remaining this season and one will take place in New Jersey April 22, with the Supercross Futures AMA National Championship taking place in Salt Lake City. While I do not know who will be entering East Rutherford yet, I look for a lot of East Coast guys to take advantage of the race being on this side of the country. I do know my guy Tyler Stepek will be there, so I may be a bit biased in the stands that day.
Boespflug Has a Big One
Supercross can be a brutal sport sometimes and unfortunately Preston Boespflug went for a ride in practice at Glendale. Preston hit his head pretty good and has announced he will be off the bike for a little while. Thankfully, he seems to be generally ok. Head injuries can be severe, but it seems like his Fox helmet did its job and I am glad to see he is taking the proper time off the bike to get better. You can see his crash on the second slide below and head over to his Instagram account to see the damage that was done to his helmet. There is no doubt it was a heavy hit and I wish him the best in recovery.
