The 2025 SuperMotocross season will not be a farewell tour for Eli Tomac. While next year will mark the final full-time season of his Hall of Fame career, he did not return for a final few laps around the track. Eli still thinks he can win titles.
“That’s what’s in my head, that I can still be that guy, still be the top guy, battling with Jett Lawrence and Chase Sexton,” said Tomac in the 2025 SuperMotocross Preview Show. “There’s no way I would have signed up for 2025 for just a farewell tour. I still feel like I can be there. I’m not chasing a specific championship now, I’m just still chasing that checker flag.”
Without considering his accolades in Pro Motocross, which are extraordinary, Tomac is a sure-fire Hall of Famer and one of the best to ever do it. He has 52 career wins in the 450 Class, which ranks second all-time behind Jeremy McGrath. In his 450 career, he’s racked up 101 career podiums putting him third all-time. And if he can grab a win this year, he’ll become the only rider in history to win a race in 11 straight seasons, breaking a tie with James Stewart. While the championships and wins are important, Eli has plenty of those. According to his dad, John, he’s still just out there having fun.
“He wants to compete with those guys,” he said. “It’s just fun for him I think.”
This past season was a successful one for Eli. Despite returning from a devastating Achilles injury that cost him the 2023 Monster Energy Supercross title, he took home five runner-up finishes, a win in St. Louis and finished fourth in points. In his segment, Tomac said if he hadn’t sustained the injury, he might already be done.
“If I would have won Supercross in ’23, I may already be done,” he said.
While Tomac doesn’t want this to be a farewell tour, which I agree, he still very much is a title contender, let us all take a moment this year and recognize the greatness that is Eli Tomac.
