Eli Tomac is back people!!! No, I’m not just saying that just because he just picked up his 52nd 450SX win of his career either. I’m mostly saying this because now WE know that he’s been dealing with a tweaked ankle for the past few weeks.
The ankle injury is on the right side, which isn’t the one that he blew his achilles out on.
Tomac opened up about this in the St. Louis press conference to our own Canadian correspondent Brad Gebhardt. That’s what we do here at Vurb, we get the scoops, man. (Insert shrug emoji guy)
Tomac made that announcement like he was Tony Stark at the end of the first Iron Man movie. He couldn’t beat around the bush any longer, so he just jumped right in. He gave the update with a little spice in it and I liked it (mostly because the spice wasn’t directed at me).
Despite people’s negative comments and saying this was only an excuse, I say shame on you for that rude energy. This is T-Dog’s Takes after all and I’m T-Dog, so here is what I think: Tomac doesn’t think the way you and I think. In his mind he thinks that if he admits a weakness, then that will be looked at an excuse to why he’s not winning. Now, would anyone in their right mind ever look at Tomac and tell him that he’s a wimp because he’s dealing with an injury? Heck no. That my friend, would be a death wish.
If you look at the results, you’ll notice that his word matches up with the injury happening after Daytona. In the three rounds in between Dayton and St. Louis he’s gone 7-7-6, which is very unlike Tomac. He’s been a non factor in the hunt for even a podium. I was starting to question whether or not that we’d ever see beast mode happen again.
Well, now I can put all that nonsense to bed after his win in St. Louis. This win is going to give him the confidence heading into this break and he’s going to finish the year off strongly. He’s got nothing to lose as he sits 29 points down on Jett Lawrence, but I’m not counting him out of the championship yet. Chase Sexton was in a similar situation last Supercross season and he ended up as the champion. As we’ve seen in the past year of Monster Energy Supercross, anything can happen.
If the ankle is in fact better (it looked better in St. Louis) it’s going to be a fun finish of the season. I’ve had conversations about Tomac just trying to figure out what’s been going on and I didn’t even speculate that he had an injury.
Both Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart accomplished their final 450SX wins in St. Louis, but this will not be the case for Tomac. At least this year anyway.
He’s back…again.
