Racing has kicked off for the 43rd Annual Amateur Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch! Despite us having a million Motos in one day we are going to cover a handful each day at least on the written side of things. Our guy Chilidog is filming every Moto and every day, just like it’s 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, ahhh you get the picture.

Let’s get to some Moto rundowns, shall we?

85 (10-12)

Eiden Steinbracher grabbed the early lead in the opening Moto of a very stacked field of young 85cc riders. Within a few corners he was surpassed by the man of the Moto, Nolan Ford. It’s my pleasure to bring his rollercoaster of a race to you via words, so here we go. Ford started to stretch out his lead over the first part of the race. Then a little over the halfway point, Ford tipped over in the corner after the Ten Commandments. He was able to pick up his bike while still in the lead and still pulled a 2:10 lap time on the lap with the crash. Tayce Morgan made his way from seventh to second place and this will come into play later in the race.

At this point in the race, the great Kevin Windham started announcing the Moto with Kevin Kelly and Wes Kain and I just started admiring all of Kevin’s wisdom…see what I did there? Oh, I’m not talking about Kelly’s wisdom either. I figured Ford had this in the bag, so why not…right?

Ford crashed again! This allowed aforementioned Morgan to put the clamps on Ford. With the laps dwindling down, the battle was on for the first Moto win! This time it was Morgan’s turn to tip over and that was the end of the battle. Nolan Ford won the Moto. Someone go get these mini dads a beer after this one!

When asked on the podium about what he thought when he crashed, Ford replied, “I wasn’t really thinking anything, I just needed to go.”

Kids, man.

I wanted to cover the old dudes today because if I don’t I’m afraid that Mike Brown may punch me in the mouth. I also want my buddy Jeff Emig happy with me, so here we are…btw…you’re not old Fro, all the other guys are. PulpMX/Pulp Hockey/Keefer Inc. Testing/Racer X/testing legend Kris Keefer grabbed the holeshot in this one. Keefer was only able to hold back Mike Brown for only a few corners before he found his way around. MY buddy Fro had his work cut out for him coming around the first lap in 34th. No worries, FROletta Lynn’s came all the way back to fifth!

Brownie made a very uncharacteristic mistake and fell over early! THE Andrew Short took advantage of this and took off. It would be all Shorty until the end despite a late race charge by the 90-year-old Brown. The 2001 125cc Pro Motocross Champion would get hung up by some lappers in the closing laps of the race. Short was victorious in his first Moto back to the Ranch. Short has actually won the last three Moto’s that he’s had at the Ranch going back to 2001 when he won the last two Pro Sport races of the week.

Nathan Hummel grabbed the holeshot early with Seth Dennis and Grayson Townsend in tow. Townsend, who is very young for this class at 14, showed that this may be his championship to dominate. He put on an absolute clinic in the first Moto. It’ll be interesting to see if Kade Johnson can get a better start in the next Moto because he came from 20th or so. BarX Suzuki mounted Cole Timboe was also very strong in this class.

Finally another showdown between Cole Davies and Drew Adams and this time not on a Supercross track! That’s all I got man. The hype truly fizzled out after the first lap when Davies grabbed his first ever holeshot at the Ranch (this is his first try at LL) and Adams came around in 34th. Adams Team Green teammate Krystian Janik was 40th. Leum Oehlhof, Jeremy Fappani, and Trevin Nelson were all up front early. NSA Yamaha’s Avery Long came through the pack and was able to grab second after Nelson fell late in the race.

I don’t know what it is about Adams and these late race charges, but the man is clearly ready for anything. Adams went from seventh to fourth on the final lap, but this race was all about Davies and his dominant performance.

This race turned out to be a battle between Landen Gordon and Landon Gibson, which are two riders I still get confused about, despite having written about them for years now. I’ll get there, I’ll get there when it’s time.

Landen Gordon rides for Team Green and Landon Gibson rides for Rockstar Energy Husqvarna…got it T-Dog? Alright, Gordon did lead this one from start to finish, but Gibson was close to making a move many times, even in the closing laps of the race. Gordon holds on for the race win.
