If you guys know me, you should know that I have two riders who I could ramble on and on about forever. Those riders are of course James Stewart and Jeff Emig. Since the Fro400 is THIS WEEKEND I figured we should check out another legendary moment from the legendary career of Emig. Say legendary again. Legendary.
Let’s take the time machine back to August 16, 1998 and the Spring Creek National. The two-time defending outdoor champion, Jeff Emig went 1-1 on the day, which was his fourth overall win in five rounds, so everything was going to plan. Right?
Wrong.
Emig was having a rough year. He was having trouble focusing on racing and was “coasting on what he accomplished the previous year”.
Spring Creek was the tenth round that season and Emig’s results up to that point were under par for the defending champion. He went 14-6-2-8-11-1-1-1-3. It’s interesting to look back on this now as the win streak in the 1998 season started at RedBud, which is where he went on his run to win the 1992 125MX Championship.
Emig would win his final 250MX overall of his career at Spring Creek this day. The full race isn’t on YouTube for the 250 class. Sorry folks.
Emig was joined on the podium by Doug Henry (3-2) and Ryan Hughes (2-6).
This would actually be Emig’s final race of the season as he hurt his wrist in practice that day and broke his thumb. Yep, he dominated with a broken thumb! It needed surgery and so he also had Lasik Eye Surgery during this time off as well and had some fun.
That’s exactly what we’re going to do this weekend at the FRO400. First, we’re going to win and then have lots of fun. Let’s party like it’s 1998 again!
