How to Get Your Supercross License in 2023

I was cruising the AMA site, as I often do in the off-season. Why? Well, sometimes new rules get posted and aren’t sent out as an official press release.

I saw rules have been posted regarding the 2023 AMA Road to Supercross, which for everyone that is non-European (pretty sure Tom V ain’t going through this) is how you will earn a Supercross license in 2023.

Starting next week at Mini O’s riders can start gathering points through the SX portion of the event. They will also have a chance at the AZ Open of Motocross and of course through Supercross Futures in 2023.

Below are the official rules going forward:

License Requirements:

  • Four AMA Road to Supercross points required to earn a 250SX license.
  • AMA Road to Supercross points must be earned in a continuous 24-month period.

2022 AMA Road to Supercross Point-Earning Races:

  • Top 20 riders overall in the 250 A and 250 Pro Sport classes at the 2022 Thor Mini O’s will earn 2 points. (SX ONLY)
  • Top 10 riders overall in the 250 Pro Sport class at the 2022 AZ Open of Motocross
    will earn 2 points.

2023 AMA Road to Supercross Point-Earning Races:

  • Top 10 riders overall in the 250 Futures class at the 2023 Supercross Futures Premier Qualifiers will earn 2 points.
  • Top 10 riders overall in the 250 A class at the 2023 Monster Energy Ricky Carmichael Daytona Amateur Supercross will earn 2 points.
  • Top 10 riders overall in the 250 A Pro Sport class at the 2023 James Stewart Freestone Spring Championship will earn 2 points.
  • Top 20 riders overall in the 250 Futures class at the 2023 Supercross Futures AMA National Championship will earn 4 points.
  • Top 10 riders overall in the 250 Pro class at the 2023 Monster Energy Mammoth Motocross will earn 2 points.
  • Top 20 riders overall in the 250 Pro Sport class at the 2023 Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship will earn 4 points.
  • Top 10 riders overall in the 250 A and 250 Pro Sport classes at the 2023 Thor Mini O’s will earn 2 points. (SX ONLY)
  • Top 10 riders overall in the 250 Pro Sport class at the 2023 AZ Open of Motocross will earn 2 points.

Riders who have qualified for a 250SX license through the AMA Road to Supercross have two competition seasons to apply for their licenses before they will have to requalify. For example, a rider who qualified for a 250SX license during the 2023 AMA Road to Supercross season may apply in 2024 or 2025. To apply for a 250SX license, after acquiring the necessary number of points, go to the “Online Registration” tab at amasupercross.com.

AMA-licensed riders who have not competed in AMA-sanctioned events for a period of three years may lose their prior classification.

Applicants renewing a license that expired more than 3 years ago must meet present requirements for a Supercross license. This requirement may be waived under special circumstances through an appeal made to the AMA.
