It’s been a strange last few rounds for Honda HRC’s Hunter Lawrence, culminating in a disappointing 5-4 for fourth overall this past weekend at Washougal. I can’t believe I just typed fourth as a disappointment, but that is where we are with Hunter.
Washougal didn’t go well for the 450 rookie. He was up front in moto one but went down and finished fifth. Moto two wasn’t much better, as again, he was at the top of the peeking order only to finish fourth.
It’s not like he’s riding bad, but his stamina at the end of the motos doesn’t seem to be there. Think about it this way: Hunter entered RedBud with the points lead and his worst moto finish was a fourth. He was leading the first moto at RedBud, when he crashed hard. He went 2-2 at Spring Creek the following week but didn’t seem like the same rider.
After the race, he told VitalMX that he would be undergoing some blood tests this week in order to figure out what the problem might be.
“We’re going to go back the drawing board, because, yeah mate it sucks,” Lawrence told VitalMX. “I haven’t even got one good moto in me.”
With Chase Sexton sweeping Spring Creek and Washougal, Hunter now finds himself 28 points down in the championship with just three rounds to go.
“I’m looking forward to reevaluating after this weekend. I’ve kind of been struggling since RedBud—it just seems like I haven’t been the same since that crash,” he said in the HRC Honda post-race press release. “So we’ll go back to the drawing board and figure a few things out about myself. It’s been two weekends in a row that I haven’t even had one good moto in me, which is extremely uncharacteristic. We’ll take this break to make sure we’re 100% healthy, so we can come out swinging for the last three rounds.”
If Hunter is able to get healthy, this championship is very much within his grasp. If not, it will be a tall order trying to cut 28 points away from a rider like Sexton.
