You don’t hear about this too often (probably couldn’t hear over Smith’s bike…#dadjokes), but Star Racing Yamaha’s Jordon Smith was actually docked three points following a post race sound test.
What? I couldn’t hear you.
According to Racer X, Smith’s bike failed the test twice, the first time after his second qualifying session on Saturday. Max Anstie and Daxton Bennick allso failed the sound test during the day as well. What kind of new components are we trying out Star? Because I want some.
He went to Instagram to explain a little more from his side of things, but this was ultimately out of his control. The man is paid to race the bike, not work on it.
The bummer news in this situation was that Smith put in his best ride of the Pro Motocross Championship thus far with 7-4 Moto scores for fifth overall. The three points that he was docked following the race put him seventh overall on the day.
Smith did not note the penalty in the post race press release that Yamaha puts out after every round.
“It was pretty good. I didn’t get off the gate very well but rode really good today, so I’m happy with the results,” Smith said.
Hey Clinton Fowler, when was the last time that someone was actually docked points for failing a sound test? Is this truly the first time EVER as Smith said in his IG post? Can you look that up for me WITHOUT complaining this time?
This was actually Smith’s best outdoor finish in about six years. He finished fourth overall at Spring Creek on July 21, 2018 when he was riding for TLD KTM. It’s been a long road of injuries and missed races since then, but it was nice to see Smith prevail at Southwick. He’s been holding his own this summer in a stacked class. He did finish seventh overall last year at Thunder Valley, but I’m just going by his Moto scores and original overall.
Despite the small setback, Smith has been consistent this season with 13-13-10-10-5 overall scores through five rounds and he appears to be trending in the right direction.
Smith currently sits ninth in the 250MX points as the series heads to Round 6 at RedBud.
