In the blink of an eye, Triumph Racing’s Jordon Smith went from leading the first 250SX West Region Triple Crown main event on Saturday in Arlington, Texas, to crashing out of the lead.
In a matter of seconds, Smith’s title chances evaporated.
This is the part of racing no one likes. Smith, one of the best people in the pits, is now forced to work his way back from another injury. A positions he’s had to take multiple times in his career. Unfortunately, that is the story a lot of riders have to tell.
On Sunday, Smith released a second update informing everyone that he had sustained a punctured lung, four broken ribs and a small laceration in his spleen.
“What a bummer. Can be doing everything right and still things happen in this sport that you just don’t know why. I’m beat up but I’ll be back! I’m currently still in the hospital. I have 4 broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a small laceration in my spleen. They’re monitoring me for a little longer and should be headed home in the morning. Thanks for all the support from the fans and from my family and team. We will come back stronger. Also huge thanks to the Alpinestars medical team for taking great care of me on the track and once we got back to the medic rig.”
While his status for the next West Region race in Indianapolis on March 8 is very much up in the air, his title chances are dire. Smith entered the race just two points back of Julien Beaumer in the 250SX West Region Championship, but was credited with 22nd overall in Arlington, resulting in zero championship points. He now sits fifth in points and is 24 points back of Arlington winner and new championship leader Haiden Deegan.
