I’m going to start this thing off by saying that I’m a huge Kevin Windham fan. I always have been, since I was a four or five year old in the early to mid-nineties at Kenworthy’s when I got my first glimpse of him.
I realize I’m not alone in saying this as many of you are as well, but man K-Dub is cool.
So, when I heard him in the booth last week at Loretta Lynn’s I was pumped. He wasn’t there to announce, but jumped in anyway because he’s awesome. This must be a tradition going forward.
Then last Friday night he joined Radio Fox, which of course is a broadcast done by us. We did a LIVE Friday night stream and had K-Dub joined hosts Jason Weigandt and Jimmy Hill.
K-Dub provided incredible insight throughout the week and had some very funny moments on the mic all week long. He mostly sticks to his Farm 14 Training Facility and we don’t see him at the races too much these days and if he is, they don’t put him in the booth, which is a travesty.
I enjoyed this 26:27 listening to the opening ceremonies transfer king. He provided us with insight on Caden Dudney, who had a breakout week at the Ranch on his Team Green Kawasaki. I liked this quote about Dudney doing whips mid moto.
“I know that the whip is technically him scrubbing, his scrubs get whippy,” Windham said.
It was also cool to hear Windham talk about Jason Lawrence, who he used to race against. J-Law had spent time at Farm 14 and it was cool to hear how it worked. K-Dub said that he doesn’t mess with J-Laws program, he just let’s him do what he needs to do. It’s really awesome to see these two cross paths and work together these days. Moto is cool.
“I have seen him ride a lot of 7:30 motos, but they just were never AM, they were all PM motos,” Windham said. “He better be in bed, thats a crapshoot.”
I did find this part interesting as well. We’ve seen countless times over the years that you don’t have to do that well at Loretta’s to go on to greatness in the pro ranks, just ask Ryan Villopoto about it. However, Villopoto did enough at the Ranch to show his potential. Windham said it best in this broadcast.
“The path is very wide, I’m not here trying to hype everyone up like you’re going to be the next Jeremy McGrath, but the road is quite curvy,” Windham said. “There are many ways. I won two titles in the Lites class, I didn’t go win a bunch of big bike classes. My record at Loretta’s is not the best, but I’ll put it up with the best. That’s not always the case, right? You have to make some sort of a showing to get your foot in the door for the future if you go beyond amateur racing.”
This is a must watch or listen. Do yourself and hit the play button if you haven’t already.
