A neck injury nearly cost Kyle Peters his career. At the St. Louis Supercross in 2022, Peters suffered a crash that resulted in a serious injury. He sustained a burst fracture in his C5 and C6 and “didn’t have any feeling” at the time.
“I could move everything, but feeling was pretty much shot. I had surgery the next day,” he told Racer X in 2023. “Two rods, ten screws. Fused from C4 to T1, so six vertebrae. Still to this day, I still have a bit of nerve damage. My feeling is a little spotty in some areas, but I couldn’t be any more blessed to still be able to go out and ride my dirt bike and do what I love.”
Peters eventually did return to racing and captured two more AMA Arenacross titles. Entering the 2024-2025 season, Peters had claimed five straight AMA Arenacross titles, but would have a new challenge in Vince Friese and the returning Ryan Breece, who took KP to the wire last year.
While he was off to a slower start than usual, Peters was still in the thick of the championship entering round 3 and 4 this weekend in Boise, ID. After a drama filled Friday night, Peters pulled out of the second main event on Saturday night.
According to Racer X, Peters felt a “pop” in his neck while riding and the majority of his left side went numb. He did go to the emergency room on Saturday and will undergo an MRI to get more answers.
Peters told Racer X “the numbness came randomly, and wasn’t related to any of the collisions or incidents over the weekend.”
This is an unfortunate turn of events for the champ. Hopefully he fully recovers and can return to racing.
