If you didn’t catch the podium speeches following the Detroit Supercross 250 main event, you missed a fired up Max Anstie. Not because he had a win ripped straight from his hands. He was actually quite subdued regarding that.
Unprompted, Anstie called out Monster Energy/Yamaha Star Racing team owner Bobby Regan and Twitter went nuts…
“Bobby, the team boss called me earlier and said that I said I somehow didn’t expect to win. I don’t know where he got that from. If he’s not going to show up at the races, don’t bother calling me anymore. Cause at the end of the day, I expect to do what I’m doing.”
If you know Bobby Regan, you know this is quite typical. Bobby loves to fire his rider up. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but its who he is and you know that when you sign up to ride for him.
In the post-race press conference, Anstie said he talked to Bobby after the race and not only are they all good, Bobby loved it.
“He loves it. It’s a new relationship with Bobby. He called me, he’s not here this weekend, trying to get me fired up. Saying, you didn’t expect to win last week but we are here to win. To be honest it worked, I was fired up. So, I said that on the podium and I was like, ‘Did I take it too far?’ So then I called him and he said, “Boy that was awesome, I did my job! I wanted to get you fired up!’”
“At the end of the day, we all want to win and we are all passionate about being the best we can be,” he added. “I have a team that has won a lot of championships. It’s navigating different personalities. Last week everyone was saying you are so great at interviews, light hearted and happy. That one was slightly different on the podium, I’m not always going to put on a show and be fake or anything. I was a bit pissed off at the time but Bobby loved it, me and Bobby are cool. The team are great, it was just his way of getting me fired up. I guess!”
There you go, Max will not be racing for another team when the East Region resumes in Daytona. Kidding. I think.
