Well, here we are again. I have a feeling I am going to be writing a TON of rookie reports on this kid. Round 2 of the 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross season took place in San Diego and yet again Cole Davies is proving why he could be a possible title contender in his rookie year.
Last week, I asked if Cole was a serious title contender and I said probably not. Well, I have changed my opinion from probably not to probably so. With Jo Shimoda smashing his hand on a pit board and sustaining two broken fingers in his left hand this could open the door for someone else to challenge Julien Beaumer, Jordon Smith and Haiden Deegan.
Cole’s first two rounds have been so impressive. Three to four months ago he wasn’t even expected to race Supercross; fast forward and through two rounds of the 250SX West Region he is winning heat races and leading mains.
Davies would start the weekend off with a seventh in qualifying but would later say that he was not happy with the result. I’m not sure what kind of reset him and the team did, but man it worked. Cole would come out and win the second heat ahead of his teammates, Michael Mosiman and Deegan.
“It definitely was a good day today and a step in the right direction,” he said in a Yamaha press release. “I was seventh in qualifying and wasn’t too happy with that, to be honest, but I reset for the heat race. I got a good gate pick and ripped a great start, and got my first-ever heat race win, so I’m stoked about that.”
Gate pick is one, if not the most important, piece to a successful night and Cole would put his top gate pick to work, as he grabbed the holeshot and would lead the first seven laps before Beaumer would take over the top spot. It started to spiral after that, as Davies feel back through pack.
“JuJu got by me, and then I made a mistake, and it was a bit of a snowball effect after that,” he said.
Davies would fall to fifth, but he never gave up and made the pass on Ryder DiFrancesco in the final corner to take home a career-high fourth. “We are happy with today. We’re just going to keep building each week,” he said.
So, the question still stands: Is Cole Davies a serious title contender and my answer is yes. He looks like a veteran on the track. The confidence you can see in his riding is top notch. He has finished in the top 10 in both rounds, with a 22nd to eighth finish at round 1 and his first career top-five at round 2.
Each round this kid is only going to get better, and he knows he can run toward the front. He sits sixth in points with 32 points, only 15 points off the leader. While I think it’s a far stretch, I would not count him out out.
