Rookie report, it’s back! I thought I was bringing this new great idea to the table. Then Troy said that Vurb did this 14 years ago, but to hell with that I’m taking over now. Each week I’m going to report on the rookies in the 250 class and give you a little insight on how the new guys are doing.
Daxton Bennick – Monster Energy / Star Racing Yamaha
Qualified – 6th
Heat – 3rd
Main – 4th
Grade – B+
Dax finally looked like he did at round 1 in Detroit earlier this year. He seemed calm, confident, and his starts were much better than previous weeks. Bennick was strong all day from qualifying to the main event. I’m not sure if it was the track or maybe just a good week of training, but Daxton looked like a new rider from whom we have seen the last couple of rounds. While Deegan was making a charge from the back of the pack to chase current points leader Tom Vialle, Bennick was able to latch on for a few laps and follow Haiden through the pack and that put him in fourth for the night. Even with a few bad rounds mixed in there, Daxton is still currently in the top ten in points, sitting in seventh. If Dax can earn at least 14 points at the final round, he will finish in a tie for sixth with Mcadoo.
Casey Cochran – Rockstar Energy Husqvarna
While Casey isn’t getting the best results in the mains, he is getting experience. Cochran joined the east coast for three rounds with Philly being his last before going outdoors. Cochran and his team had one goal in mind for these three rounds that was to just get a feel for Supercross. “Tough weekend in Philly, (I) didn’t ride like I know how and bad starts don’t help that. No Excuses,” Cochran said on Instagram. To me, this shows much that this kid wants it and although this was just for experience, he’s still not happy with his results and wants to be up front. Even though his main events have been rough, never breaking into the top ten, Casey is still ready for the big leagues.
Nick Romano – Monster Energy / Star Racing Yamaha
Qualified – 10th
Heat – 5th
Main – 10th
Grade – C
Nick had a solid weekend which he needed after the last round. His speed seemed to be great all weekend long and he finally found himself back in the top 10. Nick’s lap times were super solid and right up there with the fourth through sixth place guys, he just could not find his way through the stacked field that was in front of him. Nick is on a contract year and it will be interesting to see if star keeps him with rumors of Max Anstie coming to Star, Enzo Lopes possibly returning, and Michael Mosiman. Nick is a great outdoors rider and if he can produce some solid results outdoors, I think we will see him back on the team for 2025.
Preston Boespflug – Toyota of Redlands / Bar X Suzuki
Qualified – 14th
Heat – 4th
Main – 9th
Grade – A
Not only did Boespflug celebrate his birthday at Philly, he was also able to celebrate his best finish of the year. The RMZ rider looked like a whole new animal out there. He just missed a podium spot in his heat and was able to finish inside the top ten. He was one of two non-factory guys to finish inside the top ten in the main, so this one had to feel good. I’ve been saying since Detroit that we would see Preston break into the top ten and he made it happen in the last round that wasn’t a shootout. Congrats to Boespflug and the entire Bar X team.
