Every year is the deepest field EVER! No, seriously, it is. The pre-season hype machine goes into full effect and we look at past race winners and 250 champs and declare INSERT YEAR the deepest EVER! Okay, maybe not every year, but it happens often.
I have no idea what the DEEPEST YEAR EVER is because 1) I don’t care and 2) I’m not going digging through a bunch of stats and saying this and that when the variables are so, so different year to year.
Which leads me to this: Through four rounds of the 2021 Monster Energy Supercross Championship, the power structure at the top looks every similar to the 2020 season, with Ken Roczen, Cooper Webb and Eli Tomac beginning to distance themselves. Does that mean that AC and Marv and Barcia and Anderson and Sexton (when he returns) and Ferrandis and Brayton and Mookie and on and on, won’t podium or even win races this year? Of course not. They probably will. But occasional race wins, and podiums don’t equal title contention. While I think AC and Barcia could make a run at this, the three favorites are the same three as last year: Tomac, Webb and Roczen.
Don’t believe me, take a look at some stats, jack.
In 2020, the three headed monster of Tomac, Webb and Roczen accounted for 15 of 17 wins and 35 of 51 possible podium positions. I ain’t a math expert, but that’s pretty good. Already through four rounds, the trio has accounted for 3 of 4 wins and 7 of 12 podiums. Again, pretty solid.
2020
Tomac wins: 7
Tomac podiums: 12
Webb wins: 4
Webb podiums: 13
Roczen wins: 4
Roczen podiums: 10
15 of the 17 wins
35 of the 51 podium
Through four rounds in 2021
Roczen wins: 1
Roczen podiums: 3
Webb wins: 1
Webb podium: 2
Tomac wins: 1
Tomac podiums: 2
3 of 4 wins
7 of 12 podium
Don’t be @ Slaw when AC wins or podiums this weekend or Marv makes a podium run or Barcia wins a race. THAT WILL HAPPEN! But the top of the food chain is the same.
