Welcome to our coverage of the 14th annual James Stewart Freestone Spring Championship. This event took over after Lake Whitney went away in 2011 as a must race for the next big things in motocross. The classes are stacked and today we picked a few motos to give you a rundown on what happened.
250 Pro Sport
Yeah, so, Drew Adams has been letting the dogs out this past week. Sweeping Daytona and then pulled a fat holeshot and gapped everyone by probably 3 seconds on the first lap. Extending his lead to 25 seconds by the 6th lap and winning the race by over 40 seconds. Adams was around 2 seconds a lap faster than the rest of the field. Lapping over half of the field. The scariest part is no one was even pushing Drew, could he have more in the tank? I know Drew just moved up to A class but I really think he could be very competitive at the pro level at 15-16 years old. Are we watching a superstar in the making?
Gavin Towers was caught up in a first turn pile up and went from around last to 6th or 7th in the first lap and moved into 3rd by lap 3. Hayes Edward’s was able to hold off Tower for a few laps but eventually Towers made the move. Getting 2nd was huge for Gavin for the position he was in after the first turn and keeping the title hopes alive, but he and his team had to be a little nervous when they didn’t gain a second on Adams.
Casey Bernard was also caught up in that first turn mess and made a strong charge back to the front. Making 16 passes in 1 lap and charging all the way back to 10th and ended up finishing 7th. It will be tough, but with a 3 moto format, 7th could have him still in the title hunt.
Results:
- Drew Adams
- Parker Ross
- Hayes Edwards
- Preston Masciangelo
- Collin Allen
85cc 9-12 Limited
Division 1 – Easton Graves pulled the holeshot and held everyone off until lap 2 or 3 where a mistake would cost him the lead and he would fall back. Braxtyn Mes was able to capitalize on the mistake and run away with the win.
Results Div. 1:
- Braxtyn Mes
- Nolan Ford
- Alex Campigli
Division 2 – This division seemed a little more stacked. Tayce Morgan was able to take the win on his new NSA Yamaha YZ85. Jackson Vick moved up to 85s and was on the move. He ran the fastest lap in his division and is in position to possibly win a title in his first 85 race.
Results Div. 2:
- Tayce Morgan
- Maddox Temmerman
- Austin Keller
250 B Limited
We could write an article just on this class. It’s so stacked and there are so many potential winners to choose from.
Division 1 – Kade Johnson has moved up from his 125 and I’m glad he finally did. I felt like the 2 stroke was holding back his potential and the four stroke would fit him more being a taller kid. He had a demanding win and is ready to prove himself after he struggled last year.
Div. 1 Results:
- Kade Johnson
- Max Shane
- Deacon Denno
Max Shane moved over to the NSA Yamaha team right before Mini O’s so Max hadn’t had much time on the bike. So I was ready to see his capability after being on the bike a bit more. Max looked damn good and was able to chop a few seconds off Kade’s lead. Max seems to struggle a bit with starts so hopefully
Deacon Denno, Nate Hummel and Makai Olerich all had the speed to win, just not enough time to catch up. 1st – 5th lap times were all within milliseconds of each other. Remember these are 3 moto formats, a lot can happen and you have to stay consistent. A 5th place doesn’t take anyone out of the hunt.
Division 2 – Caden Dudney was able to run away with the W in this division with hardly any pressure. Klark Robbins was able to get himself on the podium with a 2nd place finish. William Canaguier was not someone on my list to be a competitor this weekend in this class but with a 3rd place finish, this might be someone we need to watch.
Div. 2 Results:
- Caden Dudney
- Klark Robbins
- William Canaguier
Open A Pro Sport
Andrew Short is racing this class! Yes, the legend! Gavin Towers grabbed the holeshot in this one as Drew Adams and Hayes Edwards followed him through. Towers was looking for redemption over Drew Adams from his 35-second win in 250 A Pro Sport. However, Adams was quick to put the heat on Towers on the second lap and he took control of the race from there. Short started around 10th and quickly went to work passing into fourth within lap two. A sick Matthew Curler would set aside his stomach flu and put the heat on Short, making the pass, as would Casey Benard. Towers would keep Adams in his sights in this race, but would never get close enough. Drew Adams is the truth and said on the podium that he shows the Lawrence boys a thing or two on practice days.
Results:
- Drew Adams
- Gavin Towers
- Casey Benard
- Matthew Curler
- Hayes Edwards
