Too Long, Didn’t Read | 2025 San Diego Monster Energy AMA Supercross

Despite covering this sport for over two decades, San Diego marked the first time ever that I was on location for us, Vurbmoto, to shoot video and cover the weekend for our own purposes. How can that be? Well, from 2018 to this point, we’ve always been on assignment for a client, doing projects like Red Bull Moto SpyThe Lawrence Brothers’ Flight Plan series, or most recently, in 2024, the Jorge Prado Mini documentary. Prior to Vurbmoto’s untimely end in 2016, video wasn’t allowed at Supercross. So somehow, someway, this was a new thing for my career.

More on all this later, but let’s get to business. After all, this feature is for lazy people who don’t want to read anything too long. But if you for some reason didn’t watch the race, come on… Watch it here.

Here’s my Too Long; Didn’t Read version of what went down at San Diego Supercross, Round 2 of the 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship:

  • Tomac crushed it—and he crushed it hard. It’s undeniable that Beast Mode has returned, and that beast has fire in his eyes. Ironically, it’s also the most I’ve seen Tomac laugh and smile. I think this just means he’s on point mentally and physically. Taking his 53rd win at San Diego was a statement ride of what to expect for the rest of the year.
  • The 450 class is going to be a rollercoaster. The field is just too deep not to have it shake up every single weekend. Tomac commented in the press conference that the days of coasting into a win are basically long gone. This is the kind of racing we’re here for!
  • JuJu Beaumer is locked in. From his riding and racing to his demeanor, it’s almost unbelievable how serious and focused he comes across on all fronts. He walked into A1 wearing a 101 Dalmatians fur coat, and after winning this weekend, we’ve got to admit it was even more warranted than it was following Anaheim 1.
  • Jo Shimoda is an animal. After getting a few fingers smashed, broken, and probably nearly amputated, he still lined up to race for the night. While holding the red plate, he managed to gut out a worthy performance that landed him in seventh. That puts him only seven points out of the championship lead behind Beaumer and Smith, and still three points ahead of Haiden Deegan. If he can make it through the next few weekends with solid results, he’ll still be in the hunt.
  • Jett Lawrence, despite getting second, made leaps and bounds of progress from the opening round at Anaheim 1. In the opening laps, Tomac blew by him—it felt like—and I was worried Jett was going to fall off. But Jett decided it was time to step up, and step up he did. We had the pleasure of watching one of the best main events we’ve seen in quite some time, and if he keeps progressing and working through the issues with the motorcycle, Jettson will get his first win of 2025 soon enough. Also, he said some really cool stuff in the press conference after Gypsy Tales asked him about his Beast Mode comment from 2024.
  • Cooper Webb looked pissed off. Come to find out, he had “demons” coming out of both ends this weekend. Be that as it may, the look Cooper had on his face on the podium was one I recognized from the 2019 Moto Spy. And he went on to win the championship that year.
  • Haiden Deegan got third. Not what he was expecting of himself, and not necessarily what everyone else was expecting of him either. In my opinion, he’ll get there soon enough, and I love the mental game he’s always stoking. The Julien Beaumer taunt in practice? I can’t get enough of it.
  • 10 points now separate the top 5 in the 450 class.

Been 'round these parts making dirtbike movies since '02; a weathered veteran with moto and camera related back issues, the hearing equivalent to my great-great grandfather's, and a dirt tan that will literally never come off. But I'm still in way better shape than every other dog in this joint, but that's because I use Chili and no slaw.
